OpenBook produces outstanding results for emergent first grade readers. Four elementary schools in Bulloch County, GA installed the OpenBook program(formerly named Sequoyah - Trails) at the beginning of a school year.
Pre-testing of first graders indicated an average literacy score at the 44th percentile on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills
After one school year of using OpenBook Learning, these same first grader's average test score was at the 74th percentile, a gain of 30 percentile points (70%).
Based on this success, Bulloch County installed OpenBook in the remaining five elementary schools. Reading scores in remain in the 70th percentile. Math scores have also improved as a result of better reading comprehension.
OpenBook provides significant improvement in reading scores in a remedial environment. Twenty-eight 9th grade students reading at a grade level of 2 or less were divided into two groups:
The Traditional group used existing, paper-based remediation tools. The OpenBook group used OpenBook to Literacy and OpenBook materials. Both groups had the same teacher.
The OpenBook group showed a mean improvement of 2 grade levels higher than traditional group.
OpenBook proves extremely effective in ESL/ESOL/ELL/LEP environments. OpenBook was installed in 3rd grade classrooms at Alfonso Borrego Sr., Elementary school in San Elizario, Texas in the beginning of the 2002-2003 school year.
Alfonso Borrego Sr., Elementary school statistics include:
At the end of the school year, results on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) resulted in a 97% passing rate, the highest passing rate in the school district and 12 percentile points above the state average.
"Since using the OpenBook program a year ago, our reading scores have soared. Last year, our campus had a 97% passing rate in third grade reading scores. A large part of our success has been due to the OpenBook program..."
